De-carbonizing buildings is my highest priority as a professional. The implementation and advancement of mass timber construction is my expertise, enabled through my unique experience developing, designing, and building mass timber projects. Through collaboration with cross-functional and diverse teams, I have developed, designed, and built multiple groundbreaking mass timber projects, pushed the code boundaries through testing, research, and digital BIM modeling, become well versed in the manufacturing process and supply chain from forest to frame, and advanced pre-fabrication of buildings using sustainable materials.

Mass Timber

Due to my intimate involvement in both projects and building products, as well as sustainability strategies for both, I have focused my practice on emerging technologies and sustainability. My work with CLT and mass timber has defined my career, and I have grown into a specialist designing with this technology. This interest in designing with wood started at Path Architecture where I worked on The Radiator, a 5-story heavy timber office building. Following the completion of that project I was the Project Architect for Carbon 12, the tallest mass timber building in the USA. This 8-story tower rises, approximately 85 feet tall, and consists of 14 residential condo units and 2 ground floor retail spaces. It was recently recognized with a 2019 AIA Portland Merit award, and has been widely published.

EXPERIENCE

Intelligent City | Director of Product | Deccember 2022 - Present

  • Lead the development of the architectural design platform, building typologies, interior design, and building systems accessories, enabling a broad set of solutions from a consistent technology platform.

  • Create high quality, low impact, cost effective housing solutions using mass timber in a repeatable, systematized way.

  • Collaborate with the Business Development team to identify target markets and product market fit for new building products to be developed using our building systems.

Sidewalk Labs | Associate Director - Building Innovations | April 2020 - October 2022

  • Developed sustainable procurement policies, including an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) policy applicable to all building materials and an additional Sustainable Timber Policy for all wood materials, by setting the vision, collaborating with leadership across the organization, and directing consultant work.

  • Standardized carbon accounting at the product and building levels by defining scalable processes for continuous product improvement and external embodied carbon reporting guidelines using best practices.

  • Led the building product testing program, including critical path certifications across Canada and the US to align with the 2021 IBC tall timber provisions, by developing a comprehensive testing plan, optimizing crossover opportunities between country standards, delegating tests to product managers, and tracking progress and results.

  • Led product design, testing, and documentation as the floor Cassette Product Manager, passing 3 fire and 2 acoustic tests on breakthrough mass timber assemblies which reduce embodied carbon emissions by up to 88% when combined with the building system holistically for buildings up to 18 stories.

  • Integrated our building system into our first project, successfully incorporating our products by coordinating with a distributed team of consultants, the client, and our fabrication team from feasibility through fabrication.

  • Initiated and led the internalization of the shop drawing process to advance product development and streamline project workflows by setting drawing standards, Bill of Materials numbering conventions, and part relationship strategies for 75 assemblies on our first building project, leading to more collaboration between the product and fabrication teams and clearer communication of fabrication intent to external parties.

  • Influenced project delivery strategy by sharing experience and delivery systems with our cross-functional team.

  • Represented the organization in business development activities including 4 lectures given externally, co-authorship on 3 articles, and client pitch meetings with our business development and comms teams.

Kaiser + Path | Associate | February 2014 - March 2020 | Develop-Design-Build

  • Established building code precedent that defined the new Type IV-C building type in the 2021 IBC by leading the design, permitting, and construction of Carbon12, the tallest mass timber building in the US at completion.

  • Piloted building code approval for mass timber construction with the State of Oregon and the City of Portland in 2016 to accelerate the acceptance of sustainable mass timber construction, leading to early adoption of building code in Oregon in 2018 allowing timber buildings up to 18 stories.

  • Designed and project managed The Spar, the tallest hybrid timber structure in the world at 35 stories, by winning a $250,000 national research grant and collaborating with an international team of engineers and manufacturers, demonstrating viability to reduce carbon emissions in high rise buildings.

  • Developed and designed The Canyons, an innovative and inclusive 70-unit mass timber apartment building, with 100% barrier free and accessible residences.

Hennebery Eddy Architects | Designer | April 2013 - January 2014

  • Contributed to the design, approval, and construction of renovation projects including the Portland International Airport, Lewis and Clark Science Lab, and office and retail TIs.

SERA Architects | Project Assist | July 2011 - April 2013

  • Designed academic spaces including classrooms, lecture halls, gyms, and labs at OHSU Collaborative Life Sciences Building, EOU Hoke Hall, and EOU Quinn Coliseum.

COMMUNITY + PROFESSIONAL LEADERSHIP

WEF Sustainable Mass Timber Action Community | April 2021 - October 2022

  • Selected as one of 33 international members of a cross-sectoral action group, convened by the World Economic Forum, to take the sustainable mass timber conversation from niche to mainstream and develop enabling tools to allow those interested in mass timber construction to act.

American Institute of Architects Portland Chapter | January 2014 - December 2017

Board Member, Director | September 2015 - December 2017

  • Responsible for the governance and financial management of AIA Portland. Introduced a new board meeting structure to incorporate committee chairs for better cross coordination to better align to chapter goals.

Lecture Series Organizer | January 2014 - March 2016

  • Organized the ARE Lecture series to help emerging professionals obtain licensure. Restructured the program and coordinated lectures, registration, and program budget.

Albert Main Street | Design Committee Chair | November 2012 - April 2016

  • Developed and implemented the Alberta Main Street Sustainability Plan, measured by 5 Social Goals, 3 Economic Goals, and 4 Environmental Goals, by managing the committee, documentation, community outreach, board approval, and distribution of subsequent related grant awards to local businesses.
